Thriller Book Review: Suicide Notes for Beautiful Girls by Lynn Weingarten

They say Delia burned herself to death in her stepfather’s shed. They say it was suicide.

But June doesn’t believe it.

June and Delia used to be closer than anything. Best friends in that way that comes before everyone else—before guys, before family. It was like being in love, but more. They had a billion secrets, binding them together like thin silk cords.

But one night a year ago, everything changed. June, Delia, and June’s boyfriend Ryan were just having a little fun. Their good time got out of hand. And in the cold blue light of morning, June knew only this—things would never be the same again.

And now, a year later, Delia is dead. June is certain she was murdered. And she owes it to her to find out the truth…which is far more complicated than she ever could have imagined.

Sexy, dark, and atmospheric, Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls will keep you guessing until the very last page.

I grabbed this book during an afternoon stroll through 2nd and Charles (one of my favorite new book stores) because of it's mysterious cover and intriguing description. Although overall this book was an enjoyable and fast paced read, it also reminded me why I don't read much YA anymore.

June, Delia's friend, makes some ridiculous and dangerous decisions on her quest to find out if her friend killed herself or not. The choices are so ridiculous, she is lucky that she didn't end up being killed herself. In real life, she would have been dead. The truth was stretched way to thin in this story at times.

The book does have a Gone Girl vibe as many people have pointed out. Sadly, it not written nearly as well nor are the twists as shocking. The main characters of the story are so unreliable that you're guessing until the very end about what events did and did not take place. I'm usually good with ambiguous endings and uncertainty, but I was annoyed  that at the end of story I had no idea at all what just happened.

This book is not something I can recommend as there are better psychological thrillers out there. Teens may be impressed with this as it is a simpler read, but more experienced thriller and horror readers will not be as easily impressed.

I give it 3/5 stars simply because it kept me entertained.
