Netflix Horror Movie Review: Tales of Halloween-An Anthology Worthy of Halloween

Well, the leaves are starting to change and the weather is starting to cool down. Unless you're in Florida like I am which still means you're baking in 100-degree weather and worrying about hurricanes! It's still not too early (it's never too early really) to start watching Halloween movies! Netflix is currently streaming Tales of Halloween. It’s a 2015 horror anthology movie that contains 10 short stories that all take place on Halloween night in the same (very bizarre town).

This movie has a little bit of everything. Seriously. It does. I'm talking about everything from aliens to ax murderers. None of the stories are blatantly serious. All of them are filled with dark comedy (some of the sketches are darker than others). Not all of the bits are a win though. Some of them leave you truly saying "WTF?" Rather than focus on the negative, let us talk about the stories that make Tales of Halloween worthy of joining your October horror movie marathon list:

The Night Billy Raised Hell

This segment is a bit of wicked fun. A boy is caught on Halloween night by the owner himself egging a house. He decides he is going to teach the boy "a lesson." He ties the little boy to a chair while he takes another boy with the same costume around town to raise complete mayhem. The pranks start off minor and then grow into absolute terror! The ending is pretty shocking especially since it involves a child but, you'll have to witness that for yourself.

Trick

Trick is another piece with a shocking ending (many of the endings in this anthology feature twist endings). Adults sit around drinking and watching television on a Halloween night while passing out candy to children who ring their doorbell. When one of the of the house guest open the door for a trick-or-treater they get brutally stabbed by a little girl. The house soon gets swarmed by kids who proceed to systematically murder the adults in the house. These kids have some serious motives however…. Trick is shocking, gory and gruesome. It's one of the most effective stories in the anthologies.

This Means War

This Means War has a very simple concept. Two men get into a fight night over their Halloween displays. One man has a more traditional view of decorations and the other has a more “mature” way of decorating. The men both explode with rage and begin a violent fight. Let’s just say, it doesn’t end well for either one. It’s a quick segment with a jarring edge to it. None one should get that worked up over Halloween.

The Ransom of Rusty Rex

Two criminals kidnap the son of a millionaire when he is let out to go trick-or-treating. They plan to hold the child hostage until the ransom is paid for the child’s safe return. Except, the man does not want to pay the ransom and even tells the kidnappers to keep his son! The felons soon find out why they have just made a very bad decision. This skit is very funny with an even more hilarious ending.

Bad Seed

A detective tries to put an end to a man-eating pumpkin that is devouring people around town. That’s it. It’s really funny, shocking and contains some great gore scenes making it a strong ending to a very unconventional anthology.

You may have noticed that I only mentioned 5 out of 10 of the stories. That doesn’t mean that the other stories aren’t good, however, if they were cut from the film, they wouldn’t be missed. None of the sketches are bad although Friday the 31st and Ding Dong are the strongest and the weakest. I still encourage horror fans to watch this anthology out as part of their Halloween movie festivities. It's currently streaming on Netflix.
