I've had the book I Am Not a Serial Killer on my book shelf for several years now. The description always intrigued me, but I just never got a chance to read it. So, when I saw the movie on Netflix I decided to give it a shot. There have been a lot of independent thrillers to hit Netflix lately. Some of them are great and some of them are not so great.
This is definitely one of the better ones. This thriller/ horror movie has a very bare-bones feel to it. There is no glamorous sheen or slick camera work put on this film. The lead character John Wayne Cleaver (played very convincingly by Max Record) is a strange young man who looks like he's about to go over the homicidal edge any minute. When brutal murders start popping up all over town, he begins to suspect (and stalk) his quirky and elderly neighbor for being the perpetrator of the murders.
Despite the movies earthy and raw feel, there is a sense of constant suspense and morbid dread that permeates through out the entire film. Christopher Lloyd always brings an amazing amount of creepiness to his more serious roles and he does not disappoint in this film.
I AM A Serial Killer does a great job at hiding it's true nature. It's a blend of two genres that everyone might not be comfortable with, but it is a bold experiment that really pays off. There is enough teen humor sprinkled throughout that it doesn't become a total morbid, horror mess. Instead, it feels like an intensely dark trip in to the complete unknown. The scenes at morgue where the lead character is cleaning out the bodies after death however, are not for the squeamish. It's a bloody good time for any dedicated horror fan.
