Horror Movie Review: Mayhem is a Wild, Cathartic Ride in Office Politics

If you enjoyed all of the nasty, pessimism of The Belko Experiment then let me recommend Mayhem!

I recently signed up for the SHUDDER streaming service via Amazon Prime and I’m glad I did (another blog post coming about that later). A friend of mine recommended I check out the movie Mayhem pronto. After reading the description below, I was more than curious:

Derek Cho is having a really bad day. After being unjustly fired from his job, he discovers that the law firm's building is under quarantine for a mysterious and dangerous virus. Chaos erupts throughout the office as the victims of the disease begin acting out their wildest impulses. Joining forces with a former client who has a grudge of her own, Derek savagely fights tooth and nail to get to the executives on the top floor and settle the score once and for all.

Who hasn't been unjustly fired from a job or backstabbed by someone higher up? Sad to say, I've been through it recently making this viewing experience all too cathartic. A bit too cathartic maybe? Mayhem is bloody, nasty and gory horror fun. Although it has a bit more of a comedic flare than The Belko Experiment, there is nothing soft about the kills or the buckets of blood spewed throughout. Steven Yeun more than proves he can hold his own as a leading man (not to mention he's pretty damn cute before being bathed in blood). I hope to see him in more starring roles in the future. Samara Weaving brings her hilariously dark brand of humor to the film in the same genius way she did in Netflix's The Babysitter. The two actors have great chemistry as well which gives it a slight buddy comedy edge. I continued to cheer for them every step of the way.

This movie is for true dark comedy lovers as it doesn’t get any darker than this. It makes past dark comedies like Heathers look like a Toy Story. The viewer might even enjoy a cathartic experience of watching the men at the top of the cooperate latter who lie cheat, and walk-all-over people truly get their comeuppance. You might even whisper to yourself, “If only.” Try not to be too ashamed when you do…..

This film is exclusively available on the streaming service Shudder which is a streaming channel for horror fans. Later this week, I'll go into why every horror fan should give Shudder a try! Mayhem is worth at least signing up for the free 7-day trial Amazon Prime offers.
